Marriage according to the Word of God

In his blog Edward Killian brought my attention to a book entitled Dying to live by Pastor Harold L. Senkbeil.  During this season of Lent I am writing a short blog each week on the Christian marriage.

The gift of sexuality between a husband and a wife whom God created as male and female was truly a fundamentally purposeful design.

But as Senkbeil writes “the animalistic sexual behaviors” prove that the understanding and practice of sexuality has gone “horribly wrong.” This is a sign of a dying world.

But the Word of God calls us to lead Holy Lives in which a husband and wife participate in spiritual purity and moral excellence. Spiritual purity refers to a deeper connection with the will of God as it is given to us in His Word that leads to a more fulfilling spiritual life for both the husband and the wife.  Moral excellence refers to being morally good and honest as it applies to the husband and the wife.

This implies living pious lives which involves a deep relationship with God marked by a faithfulness to His Word. What was the last time you sat down together as a husband and wife and discussed your mutual commitments to His Word?  This will to a large part determine how you relate to your children regarding their sexual lives.

In the name of freedom people defend and celebrate sexual immoralities.  Whereas according to God’s Word marriage is to be “honorable in all things and the bed undefiled.” “Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and the adulterous.” Hebrews 13:4

What has happened is that culture has redefined emotional and sexual fulfillment to allow for relationships that are in no way according to the original orders of creation. The phrase “children, which are a heritage of the Lord,” comes from Psalm 127:3 “Children are a heritage from the LORD, offspring a reward from him.” When parents welcome children into their lives, these children are gifts from God. It is their spiritual and moral responsibility to love them, teach them and lead them to eternal life.
