The Authority of The Scriptures
The gospel of John tells us that In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The Word was with God and the Word was God. Martin Luther says that only the Holy Spirit from heaven above can create listeners and pupils that accept this doctrine. Biblical scholars prefer using the Greek term, logos, without translating it. To even begin to plumb the depths of logos is to penetrate the essence of God. And the logos of God comes to us by His own logic.
Therefore, the authority of The Scriptures is God. And coming to terms with God is the most important thing we can do. In whatever language the Bible may be written it becomes all the more vital lest the will of man become more important than the will of God.
It was for that reason that Jesus encouraged His apostles and disciples to preach the Gospel, the logic of God. He promised them the Holy Spirit so that they could accurately recall what they had personally witnessed or had learned from eye-witnesses that make up the books of the New Testament. These eye-witnesses were the trouble makers that caused the people from Thessalonica to rise up against them. They dragged Jason and some other believers before the city officials, shouting: “These men who have caused trouble all over the world have now come here. Acts 17:6
According to John 21: 25 NIV, if every single act of Jesus were written down in detail, “even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written”.
But what was written down made up the apostolic message in all its fullness. And after those eye-witnesses it became the New and Old Testaments. And it was Irenaeus who confessed to this authority of the Word of God which at one time had been preached to the public what had come down from these authorities. These became the pillars of our faith.
But there were and are those who place other sources alongside the Word of God. Some hold The Book of Mormon as equal to the Word of God. Some hold the Magisterium as equal to the Word of God. Some hold the Watch Tower Bible as equal to the Word of God.
These groups differ from Protestantism, which generally holds to Sola Scriptura (Scripture alone), maintaining that the Bible is the sole infallible rule of faith and practice.
