The Folly of the Politics of Marriage
For those males and females who are considering marriage I want to advise you that the global society in which you are now living has abandoned the Judeo-Christian ethic of marriage. The Judeo-Christian ethic of marriage implies a lifelong commitment between one man and one woman, ordained by God, and becomes the societal foundation for family and community. Love and sexual intimacy within the marriage bond is a reflection of God’s loving covenant of faithfulness with His people.
This covenant model of marriage speaks of love, respect and submission within the bond of marriage. In this bond both husband and wife play distinct roles. The church’s role is to guide, direct and safeguard the husband and wife’s understanding and adherence to the Biblical principles of marriage given in the Word of God.
Perhaps you might have heard of a man named Protagoras of Abdera, 485-415 BC. He made famous the statement Of All Things Man Is The Measure. We think of it as man is the measure of all things. He was from Athens and became a well-known Sophist. They believed that truth was relative to opinions and through the skills of using words could convince people to change their opinion.
You’ve heard of Plato. He was the student of Socrates who taught his pupils that absolute truth existed. I grew up believing in God who was the absolute authority to which all of us are accountable. I became a pastor believing that the Word of God was absolute truth.
However, in my later years of training as a psychotherapist, I was introduced to people like Sigmund Freud and Carl Gustav Jung, amongst many others, who became famous for their theories on personalities. Soon theories became the realities through which we perceived each other–extrovert, introvert, and the descriptions grew like a wildfire.
Soon realities became politically defined, to the extent that marriage became politically defined. And that is why as a pastor I write to you young men and women who desire to marry. Do so under the guidance of someone who is schooled in the will and Word of God and can teach you about the importance of having Christ in your lives.
I say this because the battle waging in America today is a battle for the hearts and souls of every living person. Who shall we worship? Who shall we serve? It is not up to you as a young male and female to win the battle or even feel responsible for ushering in Christ’s rule. The victory is already won.
Look at what Jesus did when He began His ministry. He went from town to town, city to city, bringing the good news of the kingdom of God. Luke 8:1 God is in complete control. He was in control in the beginning when He created us, male and female. The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.” Genesis 2:18
He will be in complete control when He returns again to claim you because He purchased you with His own body and blood.
